Asafoetida is routinely used as a carminative and substitute for garlic in many Asian countries. In both India and China it is often favored over garlic, which is looked down upon by Brahmin. Taoist and Buddhist priests probably because of the strong odor it leaves on the breath. Asafoetida has a similarly strong odor and flavor but will not remain on the breath. In Western countries, it is an important ingredient in Worcestershire sauce.
Asafetida, having warming antispasmodic properties, is useful for hysterical symptoms, hypoglycemia, Candida albicans overgrowth, coldness, coughs and bronchitis. Called "hing" in Sanskrit, it is the primary ingredient in "hinga-shtak" , the most famous digestive formula in India. In this form it is taken as a pill or powder, or it is mixed with food to prevent gas, aid digestion and alleviate the mood drop and loss of energy that follow eating certain foods. Thus asafoetida, or hinga-shtak are effective as carminatives in regulating chi and helping to overcome food allergies.
Dose: 100 milligrams to 1 gram of the powdered gum steeped in boiling water or added to food.
Use asafoetida for: gas, weak digestion, food sensitivities, hysteria and mood swings, Candida albicans overgrowth, hypoglycemia, colds and coughs.
