ASPARAGUS

ASPARAGUS OFFICINALIS

Parts Used: sprouts and the root

Biochemical Constituents: steroidal glycosides and bitter glycosides, asparagine, sucrose, starch and mucilage.
Properties: nutrient tonic, diuretic, laxative, cardiac tonic, mild seditive, demulcent tonic.

Asparagus shoots are well known as a delicious spring time food. The root is considered one of the finest "yin tonics" in Chinese traditional madicine. Among traditional Chinese pharmacists it is a costom to reserve the sweetest and best quality asparagus for them selfs and close friends. This is because it is believed that the root of this herb, taken in small amounts reguarly, will incress feelings of compassion and love (probable because of the steroidal glycosides.)

In India "shatavari" as it is called, is similarly used as a hormonal tonic for the female reproductive system. It is prescribed for women to promote fertility, relieve menstural pains, incress breast milk and generally nourish and strengthen the female reproductive system.

It is also used as a nutritive tonic for the lungs and consumptive diseases. As such it is ecellent for advanced wasting diseases such as TB and AIDS. Similarly it should be perscribed for dry throat and lungs, blood tinged sputum.

For kidney Yin deficiency severe adrenal deficiency or what we may otherwise expercience as burnout or chronic exhaustive syndrome, asparagus root makes an excellent tonic. Some associated symptom for this not uncommon condition include fatigue, exhastion and aching lower back, knees and joints. It is also effective for sports burnout, with attendant exhaustion and fatigue.

The root is contraindicated for indivduals with edema, obesity and damp conditions, unless combined with spices such as pepper, cinnamon and ginger.

Dose: of the root 6 to 15 grams in decoction Asparagus shoots are used for: bladder infections
