BALM OF GILEAD This is one of the herbs mentioned throughout the Bible ( Genesis 37:25, 43:11; Jeremiha 8:22,46:11,51:5; Ezekiel 27:17 ). Populus balsmifera is a large tree ( to 100 feet ). The buds are commonally used in cough syrups and mixtures as an expectorant. A good combination for a syrup is equal parts balm of gilead buds, elecampane, wild cherry bark and half part licorice mixed with honey. The buds can also be made into a rubbing ointment for muscular aches and pains. Poplar bark, containing salicylic acid, is similar to willow bark in the relief of fevers, and various muscular and arthritic aches and pains. It can be combined with willow and rosemarry for these purposes.
