Biochemical Constituents: Coumarins,scopoloteine,
amentoflavone, arbutin oleanolic and ursolic
acids, salicin, tannin.
Properties: Antispasmodic,uterine tonic, nervine,
antidysentery

Equal or more powerful than its relative cramp bark ( V. opulus), black haw is also used as a uterine tonic to ease menstrual pains and to pervent miscarriage. It can be used as an adjunctive antispasmodic agent to treat asthma, palpitations, heart disease and mood swings. Finelly, because of its tannin content, it can be used to stop diarrhea.

Dose: standard decoction or 3-9 grams of the formula; tincture 10-30 drops
Black haw is used for: menstraul pains, menopause, miscarriage, nerviousness, diarrhea

Description: A shrub or small tree common in central and southern North America, characterised by its short pointed winter buds and its acuminate, sharply serrulate, ovate leaves in long slender, glabrous, narrow-margined petioles. Its sessile white-flowered cymes are succeeded by bluish-black drupes.
Collection: The root bark is collected in autumn; the stem bark in spring and summer.
