Burdock has an abundance of minerals, especially iron, that makes it especially valuable for the blood. It is a good blood purifier and is used for arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica and lumbango. The seeds and leaves are a strong surface purifier and are used for treating skin disorders.

Burdock is used to promote kidney functions and help these organs to filter the blood, eliminating harmful acids.

The diaphoretic property of burdock is due to the presence of voliatile oil. When taken internally, this oil is eliminated from the sweat glands, thus removing toxic wastes. Sweating has a colling effect on the body; burdock seeds are thereby used for treating fevers and Yang diseases such as boils, styes, carbuncles, canker sores and infections. To induce sweating, drink a cup os burdock seed tea before taking a hot bath. Chinese burdock is used to eliminate excess nervous energy, and the root is also considered to have aphrodisiac properties. It is commonally eaten as a carrot like vegetable by the Japanese, who call it gobo.

Burdock is an excellent remedy for skin diseases, taken alone or with other blood purifiers such as dandelion and sarsaparilla.

Description: Arctium is a substantial biennial plant reaching up to 2m in height, with very large ovate-cordate leaves up to 50cm across forming a rosette at ground level, with smaller versions growing up the thick flowering stem. The plant flowers in June and July and the flowers are borne in clusters at the top of the stem; they are globular in shape and covered with a dense array of stiff hooked bracts that cling to clothes on contact. The long roots grow straight down as much as 1m into the subsoil. There are several similar species of burdock and it is often difficult to distinguish one from the other. It grows on roadsides and waste places and around field boundaries throughout Britain, Europe and North America; it is cultivated in Japan.

Collection: The roots and rhizome should be unearthed in September or October of the first year, or in the following spring when the flowers appear. The leaves should be harvested before or during early flowering, and the seeds when ripe in late summer.
